The Stretch In Your Leggings Is Plastic

Go read your waistband tag right now. Elastane. Spandex. Lycra. Three names for one material: plastic, made from petroleum. A DuPont chemist invented it in 1958 to replace the rubber in girdles, and once the industry worked out how cheap it was, they put it in everything.

 

It gets spun straight through the yarn, which means it's touching you everywhere. 

 

Ours doesn't. We knit the plastic onto the outside of the fabric, so the side against your skin is 96% plants.

That Plastic Has BPA Mixed Into It

Raw plastic is stiff and won't hold dye, so they mix chemicals into it. In 2022 the Center for Environmental Health tested polyester-spandex sports bras and found significant BPA.

 

We pulled BPA out of our water bottles a decade ago. It's still in the thing you sweat into for an hour. And it was never bonded to the fibre — so your sweat washes it straight onto your skin.

Your Sweat Dissolves Them Out Of The Fabric

Sweat is a solvent. That's not a metaphor — it's the mechanism. In 2024, University of Birmingham researchers tested this on human skin models. The sweat pulled the chemicals out of the plastic, and up to 40% of them crossed the skin.

 

Let's be precise here, most of the microplastic fibres get through. But the worst part is the chemicals coming off them.

Won't cotton get all sweaty and hold odor?
